Iconic UK entrepreneur, Anita Roddick, is no longer with us

Dame Anita Roddick, one of Britain’s prominent entrepreneur and founder of beauty retailer The Body Shop passed away around 6:30 p.m on September 10, she was 64 years of age. She suffered from a major brain hemorrhage. Anita Roddick was admitted to St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, close to her home, yesterday evening when she collapsed after complaining of a sudden headache, her family said in a statement. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Roddick open her first store in Brighton in 1976. The business mushroomed into an empire of more than 200 stores serving around 77 million customers in 51 different markets. It was sold to France’s L’Oreal last year. Roddick, a multi-millionaire, campaigned not only against human rights abuses but was also an environmental activist. She disclosed in the beginning of this year that her liver has been damaged after she acquired the Hepatitis C virus from an infected blood, thirty five years ago, while she was giving birth to her youngest daughter, Sam, in 1971. Roddick traveled widely while she was working for the United Nations and met people from a number of various backgrounds. In 1990, she launched Children On The Edge, a charitable organization purpose of which was to help and support the disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe and Asia.
