Chameleonitis is one of the many “workplace diseases” to which an employee can succumb to in an organization. One can find herself falling into the trap of Chameleonitis when she continuously attempts to adapt herself in accordance with the corporate environment she’s working in.

I don’t say that it is wrong to adjust or adapt in accordance with your organizations culture. Rather I would say it is desperately required to become a chameleon in order to move higher on the corporate and social ladder. But mind that all this is not happening at the cost of your personal self...your own identity.

You are suffering from Chameleonitis if:

1. You are two different persons at home and at work

2. You easily agree to the attitudes expressed at work

3. You feel that to “get on” you need to fit in

4. You behave in ways that you think your boss wants you to.

If you are, then a time might come when you would be on the pinnacle of the corporate ladder. But at that moment you’ll realize the loss that you’ve gone through. The loss of that sympathetic attitude of yours, or on a deeper thinking you’ll find yourself nothing better than a machine that exists just to meet challenges and mirror the organizational attitude.

You’ll catch yourself running in a mad race to mimic your seniors...and don’t find it strange if you come across most of your peer groups running along. For most of the employees do the same to achieve something that they are themselves not aware of.

So its better you know when you begin to fall a prey to Chameleonitis, before it’s too late. Do abide by your organizations policy and attitude...because it is only the chameleons among us who succeed most of the time. But still mind that the price you pay for the success is not your own identity...your original self.
