Information and communication Technology is one domain of studies that is continuously loosing popularity when it comes to Australian women. Though men too are turning their backs to ICT courses but the backout is more severe in female students.
More and more of Australian women are opting for medicine and law while the figures show a 65% fall in the women enrolling in IT as a first university option.
According to the research made by Swinburne’s Institute for Social Research the factors responsible for this decline in female participation are:
1. dotcom crash in 2000
2. women’s own perception of success ( by this they mean that when a woman is not able to succeed in a particular field, she blames her internal self for the failure instead of external factors as in the case of males. This way they generalize the situation and set a trend of not choosing that very profession.)
Another fact that the report highlighted was the incapability of Australian universities in broadening the education practices keeping in mind the need of women participation, which can be done by provisions like working out different entry points that recognize prior experience.
