The haulage industry will now knock at the doors of the section of workforce that was untapped till date - women. The reason behind this search for new recruits is the shortage of qualified lorry drivers faced by the industry. Out of Britain’s 400,000 truckers, women form just 2% of the work force.
The transportation business which was an all men domain traditionally is facing a recruitment crisis owing to the poor and unattractive image of lorry driving. Skills for Logistics, an independent organization working for companies in the haulage industry, is taking the initiative to attract more women. They have created a string of vacancies allocated specifically for women
‘It’s not a job for the sort of women who are bothered about their hair, make-up and nails.’ says Katie Stirling, 21-year-old girl from Glasgow, who handles a 44-ton articulated lorry. So if you find yourself fit for a challenging job that actually makes you enter the male bastion...then Just Get! Set! and Go!!
