Women in Yemen are really taking the center stage.
Twelve hundred native women have acquired a driving license since the beginning of this year.
Almost all the women prefer to take the course, which runs for two weeks while the men opt for the final test for the license, directly.
They have lectures about safety and health measures with particular emphasis on the importance of using the safety belt (which are rarely used by drivers in Yemen), and the need of keeping a first aid box in the car. The women receive lectures by traffic police about the way to deal with accidents, the driver’s rights and duties, as well as the traffic law.
Most people are against women driving not only because they believe that women cannot deal with car, but also because they think that women will not be able to deal with accident situations. But there is no stop for the fairer sex, they have just started and very soon they will come out with the flying colors.
