If you’ve happened to come across the so called Queen Kong, a female gorilla clutching the Oscar and trying to break open the chains and screaming “Unchain the women directors!”, then you must be aware till now that what is it all about.
If not then I must tell you that the female gorilla is the work of feminist arts advocacy groups the “guerrilla girls” in collaboration with Moviesbywomen.com, who wanted to reach out to people as to ask a question that why is it so that no woman has ever won the best-director Oscar.
Even this year out of 200 films that have made it to the top just 7% are directed by women, and even in the past women have had just three nominations in this category.
Does that mean that those who opine Hollywood to be just a Boy’s club are right?
It’s nothing more than an erroneous belief to think that ways, despite knowing that we have so many successful women directors. But the reason that can be traced for this suppression is that women are not allowed to venture out openly.
It is taken with extreme astonishment if a woman plans out a full fledged action packed film that’s actually in demand ... and she’s cliched appropriate just for romantic movies, and she is most of the time pooh-poohed.
A woman director has to prove herself every time she comes up with a new project irrespective of the fact that her previous movie was a success...while this is not the case with men. A sticky title of ‘genius director’ sticks to there forehead with just a single hit...and appreciations and encouragements are next things that follow.
If the same attitude is shown to women directors as well....If they too are welcomed in the same spirit...I don’t think that the Queen Kong will take much time to break open her years old chains and grab the OSCAR.
