Figures reveal that the number of young Irish women committing suicide has increased over the years. Though the over all rate of suicide since 1990 is constant, the she number of young women ending their lives is on a high. On the flip side, the good news is that this number has fall in case of women over the age of 65.
“The number of young women aged 15 to 24 who have died by suicide has trebled between 1990 and 2004″ said Dan Neville, the president of Irish Association of Suicidology (IAS).
as far as the reasons that go behind the fall in the number of sucide cases among older women is concerned, Dan opines
“This is possibly due to improved attitudes towards retiring, improved social services, enhanced psychiatric care for older people, greater economic security and greater socio-political activism for the elderly”,
Does that mean that the young women not getting their due rights and consequently they are losing their fight with circumstances and adopting the apparently easier way of escape-suicide?
