Recently I wrote about Amnesty International’s report that blamed women for rape, though partially. According to the survey, a woman’s flirtatious attitude and the kind of clothes she wore are responsible for that deadly fate to some extent. And in this post of mine I’ll continue on that very thought but keeping in mind the perspective of Naomi Wolf. The lady has penned down what she thinks need to be done to improve a desperate situation. The lady strongly feels the need to bring a change in attitudes and this is only possible by changing the penalties. The answer according to her lies in the way in which we see a rape. The answer is not in softball advocacy but hardball politics.
Here is the problem for Britain: the parliamentary system. Because money doesn’t play the role in UK politics that it does in the US, special interests can’t put as much direct pressure on, for better or worse. Big Oil is a special interest - but so are rape victims
Naomi feels the need of a high-profile national women’s pressure group in UK. There has to be a body that works hard to keep the members happy. One that lays their clear cut demands before the politicians, what they want should be crystal clear. We do not want any more rape cases thrown out of the court just because the victim had been drinking.
Work has to be real hard now, we’ve got to root out all these old theories that most of the time give a second place to women.
