You’re fired!, this is what most of the working women have to hear as soon as they get pregnant. The scene is same in all kinds of jobs, be it the top level jobs or the lower level, discrimination prevails right till the ground level.
There are laws that are aimed at providing long paternity leaves and on the other a pregnant woman has to leave her job on the very same grounds.
What Constitutes discrimination?
Areas like redundancy, dismissal, refusal of increments, promotion denial, returning to lower-paid work, refusal of time-off for ante-natal care, form the part of this discrimination.
Why women do not complain?
The reason why most women suffer this kind of discrimination without any retaliation are other pressures at this time. When she has so many matters to deal with, this one looks trivial...though it’s not. Apart from this, there is a lurking fear for their current and future job prospects.
Impact on Women
An impact of this discrimination come in shape of confidence breakdown owing to which the women never tries for a job again. Negative treatment at work affects the women both in terms of their health all along their future attachment to the labor market.
What to do about it?
A proper risk assessment system is needed. One that clearly lays down various risks open to pregnant woman. Apart from this timely addressing of risk is extremely important.
Every year, 30,000 women are sacked or forced out of their jobs because of pregnancy. No doubt this figure must’ve been rather high decades ago, but still motherhood has kept the glass ceiling intact for working women. And I don’t have any idea when will women come out of this ceiling.
