Hip hop has been going through a lot of twists and turns and the Congressional hearings on hip-hop have not yet resolved. The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN) founded by Russell Simmons & Dr. Benjamin Chavis in 2001 with an aim to rectify the image of hip hop and connect it to relevant purposes have found a new organization called Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN).
WEEN is an organization aimed to put up a positive portrayal of women especially in the entertainment industry with powerful women of all races & ages forming its background.
The first official twelve month goal of WEEN is to enroll 1 million women and create a list that will cover albums, publications, radio and TV programs and films that support women.
WEEN also plans to hold up a Women’s Empowerment Summits in 2008. WEEN has been founded by Court TV’s Lauren Lake, HSAN Executive Director Valeisha Butterfield, journalist Kristi Henderson and teacher Sabrina Thompson.
R&B star Mya and President of Motown Records/ Executive Vice President of Universal Records Sylvia Rhone were also present to explain the role of WEEN. WEEN targets three areas which are corporate social responsibility, media/artist responsibility and community programs/outreach.
The organization has also sponsored Nuvo, a new vodka liqueur, a part of whose sales will be donated to Keep-A-Breast Foundation. The website explains mission of WEEN as,
The Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network is a coalition of women of all ages and races committed to supporting, promoting and defending the balanced, positive portrayal of women in entertainment and in society.
Join WEEN and support the cause of empowered women.
