Svetlana KuznetsovaApart from the corporate world, another profession that brings to fore the harsh but true reality of ‘gender wage gap’ is ’sports’. And the latest exemplar of the prevailing wage divide is the Wimbeldon Tennis Tournament, where the best woman player took a prize money of £4,446,490 while the best male player was awarded with £5,197,440.

This is the case not just with this tournament, but other single sex tournaments as well, where men’s prize money nearly always exceeds the women’s fund.

The Independent discusses the issue in detail and reveals that one of the factors for this divide can be the difference in the length of matches played by the two sexes. Women matches are over the best of three sets while the men play the best of five.

Apart from this they, found out that men’s matches have a greater viewer ship in comparison to that of female matches, however the sponsors are equally interested in both the sexes and are ready to invest on both for different reasons.

In the modern era, this kind of discrimination comes as a blow in the face for Britain government who has been boasting about its being “the society of equal opportunity”.

Venus Williams opines, “This is not just about women’s tennis but about women all over the world.”

Discrimination on monetary grounds is degrading and demeaning for a winning woman who knows she is as deserving as her male counterpart is, both should be given the same kind of treatment and so should be the reward for the two, irrespective of the viewer ship, sponsors or for that matter even the length of matches. After all, at the end of the day both the sexes are working equally hard to get the honor and bring laurels to their homeland.
