Ian Frazer, a Queensland scientist, received a major breakthrough today by developing a drug called Gardasil that halts the spread of sexually transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes 70 per cent of cervical cancer. Not only this, the vaccine also protects against two types of HPV that cause genital warts.
She administered the first immunizations for about half a dozen women, saying it was “hugely significant”.
Gerry Wain, Sydney based gynaecological oncologist welcomed the vaccine, saying it would dramatically reduce the number of women needing surgery.
It is available in three doses over six months and costs round about $450. The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee is considering whether Gardasil will be added to the national immunisation program or not.
