Scientists at North Carolina’s Duke University have found that lack of sleep is ore detrimental to women’s health than it is to men. The research claims that most ladies just don’t get enough sleep and that this lack of sleep puts them at a higher risk of depression, blood clot and heart disease. This lack of sleep also leaves women with a higher level of “inflammation markers”. These are associated with pain and thanks to these higher inflammation markers, women can often wake up in pain.

Early in the morning, women had more hostility, more anger and more depression. Experts also suggested that the mental and physical states of men were far less of impacted by a loss of sleep. This means that men should be more considerate of the ladies in their lives and ensure that they wake up nice and slowly by tip-toeing around quietly when they get their zzzs in the morning and even bring them tea or coffee in bed to brighten up their morning.

The research observed the sleeping habits of more than 200 people and revealed that in comparison to men who didn’t get enough sleep were less ‘more hostile and angry’ in the mornings than women who got the same amount of time in bed. This difference in sleep time and mood was a result of differences in hormones and to keep their hormones in balance, women need more time to sleep. if they don’t get a good night’s sleep women suffer more “mentally and physically in comparison to men.

Furthermore, the study discovered that health consequences for women were more severe than they were in men when the quality of overall sleep was measured against markers like how long it takes to get to sleep, the degree of awakening during the night the total amount of sleep and the amount of poor sleep. Sleep disruption in women gives rise to depression, anger, greater feelings of hostility and high levels of psychological distress though it doesn’t affect men in the same degree.

Ok ladies, before you decide to take out a candle march protesting against the “findings” that say that women’s brains are smaller than men’s you have got to know that this is actually a great thing for us. Yes, strictly physiologically speaking our brains are smaller in size than men’s. And yes, it is also true that the neurons in our brains are lesser in number in comparison to men’s brains. But what’s really interesting to know is that our brains are actually more efficient than men’s.

The extra bundles of neurons that men have are essential for reasoning skills though they don’t have as many connections between them as female brains do. This basically means that while a man’s brain may be larger in size with more neurons, it actually doesn’t function as well a woman’s brain does! This also means that despite being smaller in size, women’s brains are essentially better equipped for tackling problems and finding solutions.

Thanks to the extra connections between neurons in women’s brains, the organ is able to use fewer cells to respond to or solve a problem which also means that it needs lesser energy to function overall. What’s even better is that in terms of energy consumption and generating results, women’s brains outperform the larger sized organs owned by their male counterparts.

The study was carried by a team of neuroscientists at the University of California where they studied the hippocampus of 49 men and 59 women. This region of the brain is essential to emotions and memory. During the study it was found that men had bigger hippocampus and its size was directly related to the level of intelligence. However, in women a larger hippocampus made no obvious difference to their level of intelligence. In fact, the smaller hippocampus in females, at least at a structural level showed that women were able to use lesser neural material to achieve the same kind of behavioral results that men achieved with a larger hippocampus.

MedUni Vienna’s Institute of Gender Medicine has presented a rather startling gender-specific study that coincided with global International Women’s Day celebrations. According to its latest studies, the quality of life that women have is significantly worse than that of men in terms of health despite the fact that women actually live longer.

The study focused on women from Europe and specifically Austria though it could very well be a generalized study of women all around the world. The study showed that women in these regions live longer than men by an average of six years. This would automatically lead people to assume that women experience better health than men. However, the MedUni Vienna’s Head of the Gender Medicine Unit Alexandra Kautzy-Willer claims that a closer look at the data actually shows that women have a poorer quality of life and suffer from functional restrictions and chronic diseases more frequently than men.

The first Professor of Gender Medicine at MedUni Vienna and the Vice Rector for Teaching, Gender and Diversity at the institute Karin Gutierrez-Lobos stresses that the results of the study only highlight how important it is to have gender medicine studied as a separate discipline. A vital factor influencing women’s health is also the equality of treatment status that women need to get. According to professor Gutierrez-Lobos, the health-related quality of life for women only improves when career opportunities, quality of treatment index and social status improve as well.

The difference here is made by social behavior, role models and sex hormones. men and women experiences differing causes and effects of stress and there is marked difference between their social behavior, gender roles, lifestyle and they experience effects of environmental influences in a different way than men as well. Women begin facing medical difficulties right from puberty and menstruation related problems, gestational difficulties and menopause that greatly impact the kind of medical difficulties that they suffer from throughout their life.

The women’s movement of the 1970s saw women leave home and join the workforce in unprecedented numbers. However, according to a new report by Forbes.com, women today are quitting the workforce in unprecedented numbers to work in self-owned startups that they run right from their homes. Not only does it give them the satisfaction of being able to stay closer to home, it also enables them to become job creators and business owners. For the last 20 years, women have been creating small and micro businesses from home at a higher rate than men. By 2018, new small business jobs created by women entrepreneurs are expected to hit the 4.86 million mark.

These job-making entrepreneurs also did surprisingly well during the recession. Even though these smaller, women-owned businesses were hit as hard by the economic slowdown as much as the others, these businesses were quick to adapt to the new economic climate. Women entrepreneurs resorted to cost cutting and using social media to advertise instead of paying for traditional marketing means.

One of the major reasons why women owned businesses have done so well in the recent times is because work environment satisfaction and job satisfaction for women in traditional working environments is at an all-time low. Another big reason why women are leaving corporate structures to start their own home-based businesses is because office politics and corporate structure limit the way women can progress.

Also, the overall fulfillment they crave is severely hampered by working long days, dealing with corporate politics and having to sacrifice personal life only to spend many years in the aspiration of climbing up the corporate ladder. The low cost of starting a business coupled with scheduling freedom and flexibility helps women with sharp business acumen and corporate management experience to steer their businesses into success.

According to a study conducted by British bank Halifax, working women in the country are saving more money than their male counterparts despite the fact that they are earning less than men. Even though women in general have a bad reputation for spending too much on items of vanity like clothes, makeup, salon treatments, shoes etc., the report shows that they do in fact save a lot more than men despite taking home a lesser pay cheque. The report suggests that women save an average of 500 pounds more than men. In terms of savings from annual salary, women saved around 41 percent in comparison to just 23 percent saved from annual salary by men.

According to the bank, the average woman had around 8,211 pounds of saving from salary each year as opposed to 7,699 pounds saved by the average male account holder which showed an average difference of around 512 pounds. Another notable aspect of the study was the men and women in the South West of the country displayed a higher knack for saving in the country. In this region, both men and women saved a larger amount of their salary in comparison to the saving patterns of people from other regions. Women from the region saved an average of 8,700 pounds annually which represented 49 percent of their earnings in a year while men saved 8,344 pounds which was around 28 percent of their yearly earnings.

The region with the lowest average saving was London where both men and women displayed rather dismal saving patterns. women in the region saved an average of just 30 percent of their annual salary that came out to around 8,600 pounds annually while men saved just 18 percent of their annual salary on an average that came out to around 8,032 pounds from their annual earnings.

Even the safest country in the world cannot ensure women the kind of security from attackers as they should.. Women should also learn a few basic self defense moves to ensure their security in case of an attack. These moves are designed to incapacitate an attacker and leave him stunned and stinging for just long enough that you can escape or call for help.

1. Eye Gouge

Eyes are one of the most vulnerable organs and women can attack these to leave the attacker without vision for a few moments or to create enough pain for him to release you.

How to do it:

There are no hard and fast rules on how an eye gouge needs to work. You simply have to use your palm, elbow, knees, fingers, back of your head and nails to hurt your attacker’s eye.

Variation:

Scratching your attacker’s face and running your nails down from his forehead towards the jaw.

Effect:

An eye gouge temporarily suspends an attacker’s vision. Even if you haven’t made contact with his eyes exactly, a hit or a scratch around the eye area will force him to instinctively close his eyes.

2. Groin Strike

The groin strike is a low power but highly effective move that can incapacitate and stun even the largest and most aggressive of men.

How to do it:

Use your elbow, hand, fist or knee to deliver a blow to a man’s groin area.

Variation:

Grab /squeeze tightly, tug or dig your nails into a man’s groin to make the strike sting.

Effect:

Most men simply aren’t prepared for a groin strike which means that they won’t be prepared for one. A groin strike will deliver excruciating pain to a man.

3. Bite

An attacker is likely to have one of his hands or arms close to your face. Use this opportunity to dig your teeth into his flesh and inflict some pain.

How to do it:

Grab hold of a fair amount of flesh or skin between your teeth and squeeze as hard as your can.

Variation:

With your attacker’s flesh/skin between your teeth, you can shake your head like a dog and increase the injury and pain for him.

Effect:

A bite delivers a high level of pain to a small region which is so intense that your attacker feels the need to free his skin/flesh from the grip of your teeth.

4. Ear Slap

An ear slap is an unusual move but it can incapacitate your attacker just the same.

How to do it:

Loosely cup your hands and hit your attacker’s ears as hard as you can.

Variation:

Simply slap your palm over your attacker’s ears as hard as you can.

Effect:

And ear slap forces a lot of air into a person’s ears at a very rapid pace. This blows their ear drums out.

According to a new study conducted by Virginia Tech, depiction of women in supposedly female perspectives chick lit could actually make their female readers feel significantly bad about their own bodies. The study shows that the fictional heroines in these books often have a self-scrutinizing streak and reading about the same can have a detrimental effect on the women reading them. Chick lit where the protagonist was depicted as being obsessed or worried about her weight and body often made the women reading the book very uncomfortable too.

Just like looking at images and picture of thin women or women of a healthy weight who claim to be unhappy with their body weight, self descriptions of chick lit heroines about their own body insecurities have been found to have a detrimental effect on female readers. Using a number of passages from chick lit books including “Something Borrowed” and “Dreaming in Black and White” , the researchers began to ascertain what effect the protagonists’ depiction of low self esteem but healthy body weight had on female readers.

Students who read up to nine variations of the heroine’s weight and dress size claimed that they felt concerned about their own body weight when they were reading a description of the character’s low body image and claimed that reading about a slim protagonist made them feel less sexually attractive.

So far, there had been no investigations into how textual representations of body weight and body esteem affected female reader’s self image despite there being a number of researches that involved women’s body image issues when they were exposed to images depicting thin women or women with body image issues. The study could be used as a foundation stone into investigating how depictions of female characters in literature shapes and affects women’s minds.

Cryopreservation is a radical new procedure that is being used by women at risk of losing their fertility to cancer treatments to improve their chances of conceiving a child after they are cancer free. An Aussie woman opted to have her ovarian tissue removed and cryogenically frozen before she began chemotherapy for breast cancer in 2005. Last year, after she was declared cancer free, the menopausal breast cancer survivor had her frozen ovarian tissue reimplanted following which she began ovulating again and was able to conceive. She is currently in the second trimester of her pregnancy.

Even though cryopreservation is fast becoming a recommended procedure for women battling cancer who want to have children after their treatment is finished, a lot of young and healthy women are looking into the procedure as a way to enhance their chances of conceiving a child later in life. However, doctors warn that such a procedure should only be used by women who are at risk of becoming infertile and not by young and healthy women who simply want to delay having a child till later in life.

The medical professionals who have pioneered the procedure claim that it is a cheap and relatively simple procedure that only requires a few hours of lab time and an operative laparoscopy and is so simple enough to learn that most licensed gynecologists could be taught to perform the procedure without requiring them to possess additional licenses for it. However, it certainly cannot be recommended as a method of social preservation, i.e., as a way for healthy young women to enhance their chances of having a child in their later years. Since the success rate of the procedure is yet unknown, professionals are asking women to avoid the invasive procedure and look into alternative methods of keeping their fertility up if they don’t want to have a child early on.

We really don’t know when and where the first advertisements began though we do know that in today’s world, almost every consumer purchase is driven by incessant marketing processes. In the first half of last century, print ads began using public advisories to propagate how the use of a certain product could make life easier for housewives and their kids. Such was the influence of these ads that they established orange juice, cereal eggs and bacon as the ideal breakfast of choice across the world replacing habits that had been in place for centuries. As the feminist revolution swept across the world, advertisers began targeting the new liberated woman and tweaked it “advice-like” tone to one that appealed to women’s sense of contemporary trends. As the influence and extent of media grew, so did advertising.

However, in the 21st century, women have unprecedented access to information about everything which makes them very smart buyers indeed. With smartphone apps and social media trends replacing advertisements as women’s shopping advisors, marketing agencies too need to tweak their approach to women-centric advertising. And that is precisely what Whitaker International’s Inge Lehmann and Fatima Whitaker hope to communicate to audiences at the ninth edition of the annual Marketing to Women Conference. Set to be held at the Chicago Cultural Center from April 15-17, 2013, the conference will see representatives from some of the biggest brands in the world come together and brainstorm about what the ideal method of selling products to women in the 21st century is.

Fatima Whitaker says that her keynote speech is aimed at helping brands understand the aspirations, needs and lifestyle choices that affect women today in order to be able to tailor their marketing strategies towards them. By asking advertisers to define their target consumers by their style choices rather than stats on their age, income and traditional preferences, Whitaker hopes to evolve the women’s lifestyle segment within the global economy.

Well ladies, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and we’re sure you’ve already got an invite to the hottest party in town for the big day of mush. And if you want to steam up your style a bit more, you might be interested in trying out one these hot Valentine ’s Day party looks.

The ‘It girl’ floral look

Floral prints are going to be huge this year. And that is precisely what makes the floral look such a prized one for a V-Day bash this year. The trick to getting this look right would be to match the silhouette of the dress with the print itself. Itsy bitsy florals would be best worn in a dress with a flirty and loose skirt while bolder florals would look amazing in bodycon dresses.

Classic red hot look

Red has long been the most prized of all V-Day colors and you can use the bold hue to rev up your personal style too. Choose the classic scarlet to be your color of choice an wear it in a minimalist dress to make maximum impact.

Sexy black look

The LBD just refuses to go out of style and if you want to catch the eye of someone special without looking like a V-Day cliché, then a stunning black number would be your best bet.

Angelic white look

Since red and black are going to be the most worn colors at any Valentine’s Day party, it would be harder for you to stand out if you wore the same. However, you can choose to stun everyone and be the hottest gal at the bash by adopting a virginal all-white ensemble.

Sparkly silver look

If you are planning on hitting the town after hours on V-Day and want to shine without looking dated, a sparkly silver ensemble could be just the thing for you.
