Pooja:
Suvi Andrea Helminen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1976 to Finish and American parents. She started making films and television in 1997 and since then directed several documentaries and TV-programs. She did her education from The National Film School of Denmark, department of documentary and television, graduated in 2003. Along with that, she also works as teacher, lecturer, editor and photographer.

More coming up from the filmmaker herself, just after a little jump,

1. Just tell us in one sentence, who is Suvi Andrea Helminen?

Suvi: Rarified, elfish, explorer.

2. Suvi, how do you select and decide about the topics you’ve to write on? What fuels the fire within you to keep going on and on?

Suvi: I guess you mean topics to film? It depends on where life takes me. Encounters with people and places lead to new people and places. The topics are whatever sparks my interest in this entangled path.
Curiosity, sometimes defiance…my work is my passion and deeply connected to my private sphere as well.

3. If you could sit on the shoulders of readers and reviewers, how would you tell them to regard your work?

Suvi: I’d tell them to watch it with an open heart. The films are based on experiences and are emotionally driven. I would tell them to let themselves be seduced and that they shouldn’t expect to get answers that solve the problems of world.

4. You have directed a number of documentaries and TV-programs, is it to acquaint the audience about the cultural aspects underlying the world or to bring the attention to human rights problem?

Suvi: I guess it’s both. Actually I think it is the human aspects underlying the world that interest me. I think through looking at people, the small story, it is possible to reflect a greater and more universal story.

5. You have been a teacher, lecturer, editor, photographer, and now a director, how would you describe your journey up till now?

Suvi: Actually I started as a director and simultaneously learned photography and editing. It came naturally to continue working in several fields although my main focus area is directing. Teaching and lecturing came later on as I gained more experience and therefore had skills enough to teach others. As a documentary filmmaker, I need several different jobs to make enough money to live.

6. Amongst all your four documentaries, which one is your favorite and why?

Suvi: I don’t have a favorite. Every time I make a new documentary I want to try something new. For example the film from 2006 “Love and Broken Glass” was about the life of a teenage girl in Kyrgyzstan and my latest film “On the way to Paradise” from 2007 is about an old Danish couple, their life and their love. I like them all in different ways.

7. We would like you to share some interesting and weird experiences you encountered while directing any documentaries or TV-programs, if any?

Suvi: Every process is a journey and therefore a great experience in one way or the other. Being allowed into someone’s life is a big gift. Last month I just came back from filming a documentary on an arctic expedition in the ice around the North Pole. The whole mental state of being there was weird and interesting. It almost like being in a desert. We were surrounded by ice in all directions and as soon as we had passed the ice edge there were hardly any life forms. There were only us, a group of about 60 people on an icebreaker at “the end of the world”. It was hazy most of the time, so the landscape and the sky would melt together in whiteness. The sun never went down, therefore nothing distinguished night from day. It was a truly beautiful and unique experience.

8. What are the forthcoming events you are looking forward to?

Suvi: Doing more development on my film in progress “Skywatchers” about unexplained light phenomena worldwide.

9. Suvi, what are your other interests besides your work? How are you able to snatch out time for so many things? I would appreciate if you can share your working and lifestyle with us.

Suvi: The two things often tend to melt together. Having a passion for your work it is hard to separate it from spare time. I am really trying though, so I also can maintain some kind of daily routine. My more worldly interests include spending time my boyfriend and friends.

10. Suvi, please share one thing that changed your life, if any?

Suvi: Using a camcorder for the first time at the age of 21 changed my life. I came from a camcorderless family, so when I tried to make films for the first time it just came natural that it was what I should do.

11. Where do you see yourself after five years? I mean any dreams or plans, for the coming future?

Suvi: I take one day at a time. I’m not driven by overall goals, but by small personal ones. My dream is to keep on exploring and traveling and sharing this with people I care for. When I get older I hope to keep an open mind and being curious about thing.

12. Any parting words of wisdom, you’d like to give to our readers?

Suvi: Try the spicy scallop sushi. I love it!

Now it’s time for our rapid fire round:

Describe yourself in one word.

Suvi: Owl-squirrel.

What is your favorite word or phrase?

Suvi: “Sælsom” the word means mysterious in Danish and is not used very much anymore.

If given a week’s holidays, how would you like to spend them?

Suvi: Going on adventures with my boyfriend.

What is your greatest accomplishment (so far)?

Suvi: Being alive - winning the race to the egg.

If given a chance, what would you like to change in the world?

Suvi: Egoism, intolerance, over-consumption of resources and extreme materialism.

Wow! that was indeed a wonderful interview, thank you Suvi for sparing out time in doing an interview with us, it is greatly appreciated; also I’d like to wish you success for all your future endeavors :-)

Attitude:

Wow! Now finally we can conclude that men are from Mars & women are from... from some strange land! Chocolates over sex, is what women have told in a recent poll for the Princes Quay Shopping Center in Hull. Now it baffles me how can a bar of chocolate available so easily at a store be more valuable than having a great night in bed? The mind of women is strange indeed, or is it?

First, before we move any further let me put the whole survey into perspective for you. Let me be a good reporter (for one time only) & stop sensationalizing this stuff. This is the actual order of priority for women, as they have revealed in the little survey.

The list of top ten ‘Things That Make Women Happiest’ as per Princes Quay Shopping Centre poll:

1. Being with family
2. Being in love
3. Holidays
4. Chocolate
5. Sex
6. Shopping
7. Being with friends
8. Christmas
9. Nights out with friends
10. Going out for dinner

Now if you take a careful look at the top of this list then it says “staying with family”. That is sweet, real sweet. Then it says, “Being in love”. Ah! How touching. If this continues I might just end up crying. Third on the list is “A holiday”. Now that’s more like it. Ok, all kidding apart, this survey says nothing new. It just shows that women are sensitive, caring & just have always given more importance to “Emotional side” of things than physical side.

Then there are chocolates, followed by sex. Now, this is not that surprising if you think about it properly. Baffled? Well, let me make myself a bit clearer. Chocolates are cheap, they are cleanly packed, they stay where they are kept, they melt off easily & most importantly once you are done with them, they leave a pleasant taste in your mouth (unlike men). See, I ain’t taking sides, I’m just hoping to unravel the mystery for you behind this choice (even though my logic is bad).

See, what I’m most pleased with this list is that “shopping” comes in at 6. Now, I hope some of the gals I know are reading this carefully. Shopping is at 6 girls, not 1. Anyway, it was a great poll to take & I’m sure it was all in just good fun. Finally, before I leave you with your own thoughts on the matter, I said earlier that chocolates are cheap. I’m sure some of my friends of fairer sex (who are very “unfair” critics) might say men are cheaper. To that all I say is-perception... mere perception.

The 87-year- old British Novelist Doris Lessing won the Nobel Prize for literature, proving an official wrong, who had once remarked about her inefficiency to do so. Ironically, she found out about her prestigious award from a reporter who was waiting outside her house. She was delighted at being the chosen one, and revealed that having won literally all the prizes in Europe, this addition gave her the ‘royal flush’.

Doris sat talking to the media persons on her front door step, with the phone ringing behind her continuously. She informed how she had taken her son to the hospital and then was in the Heath, and was unaware of the prize, but was glad that now people would buy her books. She initially mistook the television crew for photographing the street for some television soap, and was quite surprised to know that she was the actual center of attraction. So, finally she would be earning good money, she stated casually!

Lessing spoke about her next venture, Alfred and Emily an anti-war book, dedicated solely to her parents. They had gone through the horrifying experiences of the World War One and she had given them ordinary, decent lives without war, through her book. The second half of the book has been picked up from the lives of her parents, as her father was wounded before the 1917 battle of Passchendaele, suffering for the rest of his life.

Doris has a message to convey to the people and politicians, regarding the ill effects of war, mentioning that only those who have gone through this hell can know what it’s like. Her agent, who had read the manuscript, has described the last 200 pages of ‘Alfred and Emily’ as ‘unbearably painful’. This elated her further, for if reading about the dreadful consequences of war could move one person, it might make a difference somewhere in the system. We sincerely wish her good luck in her endeavor to wash away war from our planet!

On being questioned whether she would refuse the Nobel Prize like ‘some good people’ had in the past, she said she hadn’t contemplated on the issue and would think about it seriously now.

Whether an individual is looking for a casual fling or is serious about a particular relationship, her/his ‘preferential characteristic’ in the person of the opposite sex will say it all!

Women seeking a short term affair would find themselves inclined towards masculine - looking men but if they want to go in for a lifelong partnership, marriage I mean, then they would prefer men with facial features that suggest kindness and trustworthiness, while men who are looking for a short term affair would select women who look more feminine and youthful asserts a study done by psychologists in Britain.

The said conclusion came following a study which corresponds to the responses of some 50 people who were asked to rate their attractiveness for a short-term or long-term relationship, after they were shown 30 photographs of people of opposite sex.

The group was also tested on the parameter of sexually restricted or unrestricted lifestyle. The less sexually restricted women favored faces that happened to be more masculine and healthy, while the less restricted males preferred women who appeared to be more feminine, kinder and trustworthy.

Pooja:
Kelly King Anderson is the Founder and Managing Director of Start Up Princess and a Trustee of One Heart Bulgaria, a non-profit organization for Bulgarian orphans. She also is the Brigham Young University Home-Based Business Plan Competition Advisor for the 2007-2008 school year. She has a variety of talents and experience in business and in the arts and is committed to empower the lives of those around her, whether they are her own children, orphans, or new friends she meets each day.

Recently, we happen to take her email interview, where she shared her insights and resources that would help others fulfill their dreams. Scroll down and see for yourself,

1. Kelly, please introduce yourself to our readers?

Kelly: Hello Women Lifestyle Readers! I’m Kelly King Anderson originally from Burbank, California now I’m a resident of Utah. I’m a happy wife and mother of 3 young children, plus I’m Founder of StartUp Princess, an online networking and mentoring company for women entrepreneurs with a strong online presence. I’m also a Trustee of One Heart Bulgaria, a non-profit for Bulgarian Orphans. I’m passionate about teaching and improving the lives of those around me whether they maybe children or adults—I love to empower others and guide them to fulfill their dreams!

2. Who or what has been an influencing factor in your work?

Kelly: God. Every great idea I’ve ever had has come through inspiration and the execution has been all Him too. I have a lot of mentors and StartUp Princess friends too that have been very supportive and assist me when I need help and have questions about developing my company.

3. What is the factor that encourages women to pursue self-employment so that they may start their own business?

Kelly: Flexibility, children, life’s circumstances...really there can be a lot of different reasons, but whatever is the reason passion and pure determination needs to be there or they won’t make it.

4. When you entered into the realm of business, how were you able to balance family responsibilities while ensuring success of the startup venture?

Kelly: Initially I had a nanny who came a few hours, three days a week to help with my children. Right now I don’t have extra help so I am working a lot late at night, unfortunately! I would love to hire someone again soon. My children are 1, 3, and 7 so they are very demanding—and fun! My husband is also helpful when he is available to watch them when I have a meeting or something...he also works at home.

5. How has internet contributed to your career until now and how far you think the web can deliver to you in the future?

Kelly: Internet IS the key to StartUp Princess, since we started as a blog and build our community through our daily articles, without the internet we would not have the international community that we enjoy. We are in transition now from a blog format to a website. We don’t have a homepage right now and it’s been a challenge to function this way, but we’re working on our new design and it should be ready in the near future. I anticipate that when our new site is finished that we will triple our daily traffic because people will have a better understanding of who we are and what we do—we are much more than a blog. We are hosting events and have our first conference in October. The web will be critical to our success and communicating to women entrepreneurs everywhere.

6. Keeping in mind that the world out here on internet changes with blazing speed and also, everything reaches a culmination point sooner or later, we would love to know your views on the concept of blogging as a whole, how far do you think the concept will enjoy its success (if you really think that the way it has emerged, a success) and what’s fresh waiting to gobble it up?

Kelly: This is a very interesting point. I have considered this a lot lately—people enjoy reading posts now and I think they will in the future, but we are preparing to add podcasts and video to our site to keep up with the demand and also produce teleseminars, etc. so that we can present content in a variety of ways. I’m committed to seeing the company develop long term...we’ll figure out how to meet the needs of our audience and do it the best we can.

7. The whole Internet, of course, as a media, is moving towards Web 2.0. How far do you think the phenomenon has emerged successfully?

Kelly: Web 2.0 is making a statement– the idea of “self-serve” info is hot and blogs are a great demonstration of that; we’re all self-publishing and allowing participation with comments/feedback. There are certainly companies succeeding in this space—Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia, yet I feel there is room for many more companies to develop in this space.

8. What maxim you’d like to shower on women who are planning to take a plunge into business?

Kelly: Our slogan at StartUp Princess is: “Make a Wish, Make it Happen!” Dream big and then work hard to make it happen—surround yourself with the best mentors you can find and keep asking God to guide you and help you succeed, keeping open that your definition of success may challenge you and change with time!

9. As you tread ahead in life, what do you expect from yourself and what excites you the most?

Kelly: Great question! I expect that my life will be dedicated to service and sharing my gifts and talents to improve the lives of those around me. For me, business is service—life is service. I am most excited when I am teaching others whom want to learn and progress.

10. Finally, we would like to have your thoughts on the Instablogs News Network and all its related sites. Which one is your favorite?

Kelly: I enjoy reading your business headlines, however, this women lifestyle site is very interesting...! ;)

Quick Bits:

1. You don’t believe in …….

Kelly: Premarital sex.

2. When you get angry you ….

Kelly: Yell (I’m trying to work on this one!!) I want to be the ‘soft-spoken’ parent.

3. If you had to walk in another person’s shoes for a day, it would have to be….

Kelly: Oprah, I’d love to be her for a day—she meets interesting people and has a lot of influence!

4. What is your greatest day-in/day-out obstacle?

Kelly: Self-care! Sleep and Eating; If I could do without both, it would be great. But, because I need both it’s hard to fit it in and make sleep a priority and since nutrition is important– I just wish I had a chef! I also struggle with patience—I want to accomplish so much more than I am physically able to do!

5. Websites you must visit every day?

Kelly: I don’t really read many blogs anymore, but weekly I love eMoms at Home for internet marketing and tips, Seth Godin, for marketing, and for laughs I’m enjoying mom2my6pack.blogspot.com at the moment...she really deserves to make tons of money writing and getting a bit of fame for it—glad to see she recently got “discovered”.

6. If given a chance, what would you change about the world?

Kelly: Apathy; the “It’s not my problem” attitude we see everywhere and people who waste time and talent—it really is disturbing!

Wow! This was simply an amazing interview, thank you Kelly for sparing out time for doing a rendezvous with us, it is greatly appreciated and also I’d like to wish you luck for all your future endeavors :-)

Recent study performed by the UK Chartered Management Institute (CMI), has suggested that women are inclined to change their job than they have for the past five years and that the ratio of resignation of women staff involving trainee and chief executive level is 7.8%, which happens to be the maximum level in the past five years.

Although, women ascend the ladder of promotion faster than their male counterparts yet their respective incentives say a different story. The CMI postulated that incentives for women employees are 10.2% while men receive 13.8% of their income.
Despite the weight of legislation and the reality that reward should match responsibility, gender bias seems to be getting worse, not better, said the director of marketing and corporate affairs at the company Jo Causon.

Fiona Price, the creator of Diva-Biz added that a new networking website was initiated that aims at providing support and help for today’s businesswomen.

Fiona Price says:

Undoubtedly, women generally do business in a different way to men and need different business support with an emphasis on role models, networking and mentoring. Diva-Biz aims to provide a local, national, even international network for business women and provide the inspiration which is missing to get women into business and aim for the top.

Pooja:

Bradford & Bingley Bank have come up with their recent survey, which they carried out in Britain, covering more than 1000 women, 35 to 44 years of age. The results concluded that only 58% of women were ‘very happy’ with the choice of hubbies.

Further, the figures postulated that one out of 5 women thinks they have married the wrong man and therefore do not mind swapping their husbands for someone else. While, one in 12 women holds a view that it was their mistake for marrying a particular man.

Findings further revealed that although majority of women prefer to remain single yet they want kids.

Now why this happens, after staying into a relationship over a long period of time, the two of them suddenly feels disinterested in each other? They feel as if they are not compatible and hence, start flinging stones (though not literary) to each other.

I think this happens because of the escalating level of expectations which they start keeping from each other. The two are oblivious of the fact that when one is in a relationship, expectations just drifts in and with the passage of time, it keeps on mounting- which is but natural- and when either of them do not get the desired result (of their expectations), they feel miserable and heartbroken. The same relationship which was bestowing heavenly pleasures to them becomes nothing more than a journey in arid desert land and then comes a point when they are not able to subdue their agony and feels they could have made a better choice in life by not marrying the ‘present’ partner.

This not only happens with women but men too may develop apprehensions, at times, they might feel insecure and self doubting.

Hence, in order to relish the essence of being into a relationship, both (the partners) will have to sow the seeds of mutual respect, egalitarianism and love in unison only then they can experience wonders in their relationship:-)

Pooja:
Women in the US constitute 10 and a half million business digging up to $2.4 trillion annual revenue. For every business started by a man in America, two are started by women and interestingly, majority of these entrepreneurs are moms!

For most of the moms, their new venture was not at all difficult rather it’s just a mere deviation from the former goal. In the first case, their aim was housekeeping but then it shifted to business but in the whole scenario, their method of approaching things remain the same, that is both require persistence, dedication, organization, and creativity. As the following moms did:

Julie Dix

The idea of creating taggies blanket for children’s crossed Julie Dix’s mind when she realized that ‘her li’le boy was often more interested in the satin tags on toys and clothing than the object itself’. Hence, she started making soft security blanket with assorted tags adorning all four sides. The idea became an instant hit and no sooner, she along with one of her friend scored a utility patent for the unique blanket, and in 2003 the company paired up with powerhouse Scholastic Books™ for a Taggies™ book line.

And by 2005, their 25-employee company happened to spill out revenue between $2 million to $5 million.

Laine Caspi

Caspi made her way into headlines with her Ultimate Baby Wrap, which she experienced while she was traveling to Israel. As she was suffering from back pain, so she carried her baby on a sling, which incidentally was a custom in the region. Later when she returned to Los Angeles, she find herself selling the slings as other moms too became fascinated with the idea. Her sales became such a major hit that she had to hire a Public Relations person. Thus, she realized the need of parents and laid the foundation of Parents of Invention in 2002, which now is a soaring business of $1.5 million.

Bette Fetter

Bette Fetter started Young Rembrandts that aims to focus on the drawing skills while developing learning skills of children so that they may have academic advantage in the classroom. But this didn’t come all of a sudden rather it was a gradual process.

Fetter started giving private art lessons to a few children in her ‘kitchen table’ in 1988, then she expanded into local school and by 1992, her created Young Rembrandts amounted to $250,000 annually and finally, she entered into the international market. In 2006, fifty-seven Young Rembrandts ™ franchises earned $4.3 million.

So what must you do to become an entrepreneurial mom?

It is not all difficult to initiate a private enterprise, just believe in yourself and develop perseverance that’ll take you out victorious in all situations. Along with that, keep the following things in mind:

1.	When you are planning to start off some business, you might hit more than one idea, so need of the hour would be to pen down all the ideas that are coming to your way and rank them according to the most promising ideas.

2.	You may take your family and friends into confidence; they may guide you and may tell you your flaws if any, in your idea.

3.	After you have laid bare your ideas, watch out for the trend, or the competition. Then look out to your competitors’ website and give an in-depth research to their products and try to find out how your product is different from their manufactured goods or how your product is in a position to outdo the others.

4.	Next step would be to develop your brand, which also includes creating the company or product logo. Make your logo in such a manner that may give a positive impact to the people and also easily reflect the company’s aim (regarding the product).

5.	Do not waste time in protecting your company name and logo once you have created them, as they will be your prized possession. You may do so by filing a federally registered trademark.

These are the simple ways to initiate a business setup, whether building an at-home business or a large global brand, you can do it. All it requires is a positive approach and determination and of course ‘the wining idea’.

Pooja:

Study carried out by researches in Cardiff suggests that alcohol consumption among women reaches its zenith when they are in their forties but in case of men, it occurs in their late twenties.

In order to carry out the study, more than 800 people were ‘breathalysed’ out of which forty percent of men and twenty percent of women fell in the category of ‘at risk’ for heavy drinking.

Further, it also emphasized that concentration of alcohol was higher in men who were in late twenties but it dropped off with the advancement of years. However, the case was just the opposite when women were taken into consideration, their blood alcohol level rose as they reach forty plus.

Scholars fail to understand the reason for such a change yet one of them speculates that women in young age have to share certain responsibilities but ‘once the children have left home, then the sky’s the limit.’

The survey concluded:

1.	Average time of alcohol consumption for men and women is 7 hours and 5 hours, respectively.
2.	Younger women were less drunk with respect to older women.
3.	Older men were more drunk than men in late twenties.
4.	Younger drinkers, students and the unemployed are not the most ‘at risk’ groups for heavy drinking.

Statistics show that women definitely ARE the major consumers of alcohol, ladies what’s wrong with you? You are making yourself vulnerable to hypertension, anemia, and malnutrition, as it’ll attack you much quicker than alcoholic men. A study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, too showed that a woman’s risk of breast cancer rises with the amount of alcohol regularly consumed. Drinking moderately or not at all can reduce the chance of getting breast cancer.
So ladies’ it’s in your hands, to maintain hale and hearty life style or to adopt an unhealthy living habit, the ball is in your court!

Pooja: Women as compared to men are steadier and don't 'churn' money, whether, they share familial responsibility or prefer to stay single, they walk economically. Hence they are able to retain enough money.

Study carried out by Engage Mutual Assurance...

Pooja:
Women as compared to men are steadier and don’t ‘churn’ money, whether, they share familial responsibility or prefer to stay single, they walk economically. Hence they are able to retain enough money.

Study carried out by Engage Mutual Assurance in UK advocates about the efficiency of women in handling money matters. Their study asserts that nearly 70% of the native women are in a position to work in a prearranged budget, while ratio for men is 68% for the same matter. Furthermore, 67% of women are able to maintain a healthy savings plan as Karl Elliott, marketing director at Engage Mutual Assurance, said,

The good news from these results is that many Britons actually find saving as part of their day-to-day lives relatively easy. When you compare saving for the future to other common lifestyle challenges, you realise that getting into the habit of saving can be easier than changing your diet for example.

The research has been supported by a similar study led by Alliance & Leicester, they have postulated that the consumers in Britain, have put aside nearly £820 million in savings accounts.

This is nothing than a sheer fact; women are much more resourceful, whether its about handling home affairs or financial matters, they can manage either of them competently, as Nicola Horlick did.

An article in International Herald Tribune too wraps up the same findings. It says that testosterone-fueled behavior in men makes them overconfident that directs them to take risks that don’t pay off in the long term.

Men have been in charge of the money for long enough, now it’s time to give the women a chance!
