The Advantages of Evidence-Based Practice in Helping to Recover from Substance Abuse

The website explains the concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) to substance abuse.

The main feature of rehab is that the substance abuser is in a new environment conducive to change. There is a dedicated staff who watches over, conducts therapy sessions and manages the person’s stay. This is meant to keep the person away from any substance which he or she has been using.

This is where EBP comes in. EBP has been defined as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the patient.” The concept is based on using methods that work.

If a group of substance abusers enter an EBP facility, and there are some who can keep off their addiction and can recover, then the program is considered a success. The evidence exists that people achieve long-term recovery using the program.

Residential Program

A residential program is an intensive, time-limited stay at a rehab facility. During the stay, the patient undergoes a series of services designed for them to confront their problems and for them to understand how they need to fight their addiction. These services include education, and individual as well as group counseling. The patients are also introduced to community support groups where they can continue on their road to recovery.

Unlike institutional rehab where the facility is run like a mental institution or a hospital psychiatric ward, residential rehab facilities have amenities which are more idyllic, where the patient can be stress-free. Removing stress from the patient’s environment helps him focus on his addiction. This can also be used for cases of mental health disorders as well as trauma.

Residential rehab centers are called as such because the patients are in a live-in facility where they are away from their home. Some facilities call themselves farms or clinics and are usually a distance away from any city.
