What is the Impact of Stress to Your Mind and Body?

Without proper stress management, you put your mind and body at risk for multiple problems.

Stress not only affects your emotional health. It can also wreak havoc to your physical body. The response weakens your immune system, making it vulnerable to all sorts of attacks by pathogens. Stress directly increases blood flow and heart rate by causing the release of triglycerides and cholesterol to into the bloodstream. Obesity and habits related to stress increase the probability of heart problems.

If not well managed, the response can lead to other serious health problems such as:

  • Depression
  • Asthma

Stress also exposes your body to increased levels of hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline. The effects of these hormones are as follows:

  • Your heart beats faster
  • Your blood vessels narrow

The above effects end up temporarily elevating your blood pressure. Stress has also been proven to cause changes in the clotting of the blood, thereby increasing the chance of a heart attack.

Diabetes

If you’re unable to handle the pressures at work or in your personal life, your body doesn’t respond the way it should when you have diabetes. Instead of using stored energy to help you cope with stress, glucose collects in the blood.

Stress worsens diabetes in two ways:

  • It can prevent you from taking better care of yourself; you forget to check glucose levels or not follow a meal plan.
  • Stress increases blood glucose levels

 

Stress is a fact of life. While you can’t eliminate it, you can control how you respond to triggers. Take the time and effort to practise techniques that manage stress, from yoga to meditation. In doing so, you keep your mind and body healthy.
